The CytoSMART Lux3 FL is a small fluorescence live-cell imaging microscope equipped with one brightfield and two fluorescent channels (green and red). The device enables researchers to unravel cellular processes in real-time, providing lots of valuable data about the experiments and answers if, when, how, and to what extend the cellular processes occur. CytoSMART’s first fluorescence live-cell imager allows users to track dynamic cellular processes with high specificity by taking high-quality images to create real-time time-lapse movies. Currently, fluorescent labeling is mostly used as an end-point measurement. However, time-lapse imaging of live cells can give much more information about biological processes. By using automated imaging at regular time intervals, the temporal resolution of the fluorescent data is increased, leading to even more relevant data about the cellular processes. Kinetic fluorescent imaging of cellular processes requires environmental control throughout the experiment. Because of its small size, the Lux3 FL fits inside any standard incubator. This enables you to perform fluorescent live-cell imaging experiments parallel to your regular cell cultures. Because of the remote data accessibility in the CytoSMART Cloud, your cells do not have to be disturbed during the experiment. This makes sure the cells are in the most optimal culture conditions as possible. Next to this, the remote data accessibility prevents you from making unnecessary lab visits.

If fluorescent die affects cell viability depends on the dye that is used. In general, when a live cell imaging dye is developed, cell viability is always taken into account. Of course, you don’t want the dye to affect the cells negatively. There are various fluorescent live-cell imaging dyes on the market, and we can share our recommendations. Feel free to contact us for more information.

Many different fluorescent dyes can be used, as long as the fluorescent dye's excitation and emission spectrum correspond with the wavelength of the LED and detector of the Lux3 FL. Some examples are RFP (red fluorescent protein), PI, Cell Tracker Orange, Cell Tracker Red for the red channel, and GFP (green fluorescent protein), Cell Tracker green for the green channel.


It is essential to match the fluorescent dye with the specifications of the device. E.g. we don't recommend using Hoechst or DAPI since they are blue dyes. Next to this, it is important to ensure that the dye is not toxic for the cells since you want to use it on living cells.

Magnification is equal to a standard microscope with a 10X and 20X lens.

Yes, with the Lux3 FL, it's possible to set the LEDs intensity for all channels (brightfield, red fluorescent channel, and green fluorescent) according to users' preferences.

Both fluorescence channels are included in the price. Researchers can make a time-lapse (or a single snap) with the brightfield, red and green channel imaging in parallel. Of course, it is also possible to choose just one of the fluorescent channels, depending on the experiment's goal and the researcher's preferences.

Images can be recorded at pre-defined intervals. At the start of a new experiment, you can specify the interval rate anywhere between 5 min - 12 hours.

The CytoSMART Lux3-fl allows monitoring of a wide range of different culture dishes and flasks, such as:


  • ​T-flasks: T-25 up to T-250
  • Single well, multi-well plates (6, 12, 24, 96 well)
  • microfluidic chips
  • Flat tubes
  • Petri dishes
  • Slides

For larger flasks an adapter plate may be required. This plate can be purchased at CytoSMART.

The system requires a dedicated PC or laptop running on windows 10 or above and with a USB3 port and an active internet connection. If your lab doesn’t have the sufficient hardware, we can supply these for a fee as part of your order.

The CytoSMART Lux3 FL remote functionality runs on cloud-based software. In this cloud-environment, the images and videos are stored and can be accessed using user-specific login details. Next to unlimited data storage, automated image analysis algorithms can be run to quantify confluence and cell migration.

The devices are easy to clean using lint-free wipes and EtOH (70%) or IPA. Do not use Acetone to clean the device. Please be aware that the device cannot be autoclaved. After sterilizing with EtOH or IPA the device can be used in a cleanroom.

This is not necessary. However, to get the best results, we advise covering the fluorescence microscope slightly so that the incidence of light from the side is attenuated as much as possible. If you cover the light arc using an open book, this will already suffice to visualize this.
